Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental experts consider implants to be the best tooth-replacement procedure in dentistry because they are durable and strong. Implants also don’t require the preparation or removal of adjacent teeth that dental bridges require.

There are several components to a dental implant including a ceramic crown, an abutment, and a titanium rod that your dentist implants into your jawbone to act as your tooth’s root.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

The advantages of dental implants include:

  • Helping persevere your facial structure
  • Making it easier to eat and speak
  • Preventing your surrounding teeth from shifting

Once you lose a tooth, your jawbone begins to atrophy little by little. Within one year, your jawbone’s density can decrease by 25%. This is why dental implants not only improve your smile, but they also help prevent the bone in your jaw from shrinking.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

To determine if you’re a candidate for dental implants, you need to have a consultation with the dental staff at Plaza Family Dentistry. They examine your mouth to ensure you don’t have active gum disease, which can lead to the failure of your implant.

The team also takes X-rays of your jawbone to make sure it can provide a sturdy foundation for the titanium rod. If it turns out your jawbone is too weak for your dentist to place the implant, you may need a bone grafting procedure.

What does dental implant surgery involve?

Dental implant surgery is a two-step procedure. First, the dental team provides you with a sedative, which can be a local anesthetic or nitrous oxide gas. This ensures you have a pleasant and painless experience.

Afterward, your dentist makes a small incision into your gum tissue exposing the bone underneath. They then place the titanium rod into the bone socket of your missing tooth and stitch up your gums. This is the end of step one.

In between your first and second appointment, your jawbone needs three to six months to fuse with the titanium rod. Once this occurs, you come back to Plaza Family Dentistry, where your dentist attaches the abutment to your implant. The abutment acts as the anchor, connecting your implant with your new tooth, called a crown.

Dental implants help replace your missing teeth so you can feel confident when you smile. To schedule an appointment with the dental team at Plaza Family Dentistry, call the office or book it online.
