Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that covers your tooth, protecting it when it’s damaged and cannot be restored with other types of dental work. The dental team customizes your crown to match your surrounding teeth’s size, shape, and color to provide optimal cosmetic results for your smile.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

A dental crown can help with the following:

  • Protects a weak tooth from breaking
  • Restores the shape and size to your tooth
  • Covers severely discolored teeth
  • Covers a dental implant
  • Helps hold your dental bridge together

To determine if a dental crown is the best option to cover your damaged tooth, Plaza Family Dentistry’s team recommends you schedule a consultation with the dentist.

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a nonremovable dental appliance that helps fill in a gap left by a missing tooth or teeth. The bridge consists of an artificial tooth, known as pontic, that fills in the gap. The artificial tooth is held together by two dental crowns that anchor onto your surrounding teeth.

A bridge prevents your surrounding teeth from shifting, restores a fully functioning bite, and cosmetically enhances your smile.

How do I care for my dental crowns or bridges?

To ensure your crown or bridge last longer than 10 years, it’s important for you to care for them the same way you would your natural teeth. Plaza Family Dentistry’s staff recommend you avoid biting your fingernails, using your teeth as an opening tool, or grinding your teeth, as doing so could damage your crown or bridge.

Crowns and bridges are susceptible to decay and plaque near the gum line so it’s important for you to follow proper oral hygiene practices. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once daily. Make sure to floss along the underside of your artificial tooth in the bridge since food can also get stuck there.
